New Year's Eve Style

Posted on December 24 2015

Hey gang.

Just wanted to take a moment before the holiday craziness to say Happy Holidays, thank you for the show of support since I launched the e-commerce site and my contemporary womenswear line on www.steveguthrie.com on Black Friday.  I also want to talk about two trends that I believe will fit in nicely over New Year’s Eve 2016.

Let me start by saying that I cannot adequately express how grateful I am for all of the ‘likes’ on Facebook and Instagram, as well as the online purchases at www.steveguthrie.com…especially the purchases. Those are what will ensure that I get to do another collection – so thank you, thank you and thank you. And please continue to share the Facebook site and the website address with your friends.

You may remember a few years back when Rihanna wore a stylized version of a tux to the Met Gala. I always love this look (not necessarily her hair) because androgyny on women is so sexy (in my opinion). Also, it’s a look that doesn’t ever really go out of style – think Lauren Bacall, Katharine Hepburn, Lauren Hutton, etc. The legs may widen, the shoulders broaden, or tie/no tie, but the ‘look’ is without a doubt a win-win.

I’m not sure that this simple, but truly utilitarian article of clothing has sufficiently caught on here in Houston, especially with the weather we are slotted to have over Christmas. What I can say though is that both the Gold Chenille Jacquard and Black Cotton Pique capes in my collection are one of my number one sellers at this point, and why not? Capes were all the rage at Paris Fashion Week in Spring 2015 (showing Fall 2015 collections) - http://www.instyle.com/news/paris-fashion-week-trend-capes-are-new-jackets. And so it follows that I have fell in love with this nod to all things glamorous, functional, and versatile in my current collection. And I hope to evolve the look in the coming collection.Steve Guthrie Fall 2015 - Cape

That brings me to the likes of Janelle Monáe, Zendaya and Nicole Richie. They’ve all sported these items during 2015. They’ve all made them their own. And one thing is certain, they all looked elegant, hip and sexy.

Courtesy of http://media-cache-ak0.pinimg.com/For Janelle Monáe, androgyny is the cornerstone of her look. But cropped tuxedo pants, much like the textured black pants in the Steve Guthrie Premier Collection speak to a “Brat Pack” coolness that really does well for a solid New Year’s Eve look. With a tie or without a tie, with or without a jacket, the outfit lends itself to comfort, ease of wear and black goes anywhere.

Steve Guthrie Fall 2015 - Cigarette Pant Black Cotton PiqueThe Steve Guthrie high-waisted cigarette pants are also pleated, textured and with pockets. These are all trends that showed on the runways for Fall 2015, for example Dolce & Gabbana

Below is a contrast in styling between Zendaya and Janelle Monáe.

Compliments of http://ambersceats.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/09/nicole-richie.jpgFor capes, I turn to Nicole Richie and Janelle Monáe again.   Both of these women show that no matter the length, a cape can be elegant or sporty, functional and transitional, as well as just plain cool.

Compliments of http://cdn.posh24.com/For 2015 / 2016, I kept the cape short in front to allow for movement of the hands (think holding a drink or your partner while dancing, slit at the sides for full range of motion and with a longer back to blend with the derriere.

Steve Guthrie Fall 2015 - Capelette Black Cotton PiqueBoth Gold Chenille Jacquard and Black Cotton Pique are interestingly textured, lightweight, breathable fabrics with a little stretch.

So if you want to make a statement on New Year’s Eve or just want to have fun, consider coupling these two items for an ensemble that will surely get you noticed. And then get ready to wear them together or separately throughout 2016 because they will be staples of every woman’s wardrobe.
